Maura Naughton

Maura Naughton was awarded an art scholarship at the Springville, Utah All-State High School Show in 1974 after attending Highland High School in Salt Lake City.  Her teacher was Harold Petersen who she now works for teaching oil, watercolor and acrylic painting at the Petersen Art Center.  She graduated from Westminster College with a degree in fine art studying under Don Doxey.  Not sure that a career in art would support her, she took a commission in the army and served for 20 years, retiring back home in Salt Lake City in 2003.  Maura’s free time in the army allowed for some travel to art centers and museums in Europe, walking in the footsteps of Abrecht Durer, Vincent Van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec to name a few.

She became very involved with the Utah Watercolor Society after moving back to Utah.  Her paintings have been juried into many watermedia shows: the Utah Watercolor Society, the regional Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, the Intermountain Society of Artists, and Springville.  She has won some top awards to include many firsts from Murray City and her painting “Stuttgart Bahnhof” hangs in the mayor’s office.

Maura currently lives in Murray Utah with her husband and dog.  She works in her studio at Rockwood Artists Studios in the Sugar House neighborhood of SLC.  The time in the army fed a lifetime desire to travel to new places and she and her husband continue travel to distant locations at least once a year.
